RSS what? iGoogle who?

September 2, 2009

If you are familiar with these two terms, then this post is not for you.  However, if you don’t now what a ‘Real Simple Syndication’ (or RSS) is or are wondering why there is an “i” before Google, read on…

You’ve probably seen the RSS button before but didn’t know what it meant.  It is actually a simple (real simple) way for people to subscribe to a feed of your website or blog.  They will view this information on an external site such as iGoogle ( that acts as a dashboard/homepage.  When someone has subscribed via RSS feed, they will receive updated content using iGoogle or a similar reader.

iGoogle is great because it allows you to ad lots of RSS feeds.  They could be websites, blogs, widgets submitted to Google for use on iGoogle pages, even searches.  For example, I was looking for tickets to the Kenny Chesney concert last week in Raleigh.  Instead of searching 15 times per day to see if any posted new tickets for sale, I just subscribed to my search and placed it on my iGoogle homepage. I could then see my search for “Kenny Chesney” on Craigslist in Raleigh, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem, all in the same place!

Finally, if you want to subscribe via RSS, do this.  Click on the RSS icon, choose a reader ie-iGoogle, then click “add to Google homepage and voila!

Now you know all about RSS Feeds!

Great article on how to spend your time…socially

August 5, 2009

I get a lot of questions from business owners about social media. They aren’t sure whether or not they should jump in.

Let’s keep this short, we could analyze this for hours…

Remember, social media is a tool, just like advertising, just like business cards, just like traditional networking events or cold calling. It isn’t a silver bullet that will turn your business around in 2.5 hours. Read this article below for a sense of perspective. You have to decide for yourself if it is a fit for your organization right now. I believe social media is here to stay in some capacity, it really depends a lot on each organization’s situation.

Remember, as entrepreneurs, our most valuable asset is what we do with our time.

We’re not out of this yet…

July 24, 2009

Well, after a long hiatus, I’m back in the blogging business. I’ll be keeping this post short and sweet because I’m off to meet a friend and talk Linkedin. Should be a fun session. I’m trying to help him ‘maximize’ his opportunity. This got me thinking, we’re not out of this yet. Look at all those who have fallen…

Jim Rohn (if you don’t know who this is, you need to google him!) reminded me this morning that education and attention are soooo important. Education through our own experiences good and bad are invaluable and we MUST learn from them. We must also learn from the successful and unsuccessful – examine it, why did they go one way or another?

We must also pay attention. Rohn said (paraphrasing) that they guy with no money in his bank account probably has high cholesterol…because in the last 5 years, he never paid attention to either one.

So what does this have to do with marketing? We’re finding that a lot of companies have ‘cut’ and are now really struggling. Did they cut the right campaign? What if they cut the rope they were holding on to?

This is where I can help. We want to help business owners and marketing manager figure out an actionplan. If you don’t pay attention to your marketing efforts, it will go one of two ways – toward zero or climb with each ‘good’ account rep that walks into your door.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a strategic partner along the way? Contact me

How do you see it?

Don’t wish life was easier…

March 25, 2009

Why on earth would anyone wish that? Probably because they know that growth comes through trials. When ‘things’ are hard, you get the most out of them!

So…”Don’t wish it were easier, wish YOU were better!”

Feel inspired, be inspired, succeed!

March 25, 2009

Okay, I said that I was going to leave blogging up to the experts. The truth is, writing actually gives me clarity and inspires me. Weird. It is funny how writing down what I feel inspires me more than just ‘being’ inspired. I guess it’s the feeling that I’ve shared something and hopefully helped someone else.

We are living and working in tough times. It seems as if this paranoia has slipped into our subconscious. Easy decisions in business and our personal lives seem almost crippling because of the fear of the unknown.

America is playing defense. You’re thinking about the Sweet 16 now 🙂

A large majority of the US is playing the game of life to ‘not lose’ instead of playing to WIN!

So, feel inspired, then be inspired, play the game to WIN! (inspiration below)

Scare Yourself

“If you don’t scare yourself at least a few times every time you ski, you’re doing something wrong.” -Warren Miller

This also applies to business. Remember, if it was easy, everyone would do it and you would go broke. Small business is all about laying it on the line, working hard, pushing the envelope, learning from falling. It’s a full contact sport. You WILL fall, but hopefully, you will learn from the falls and “stick it” when it counts!

For all the non-skiers in the house, Warren Miller is THE pioneer of ski videography.

Get out there, scare yourself, learn from it and BE SUCCESSFUL!

Have a great week!

It’s almost ski season!

“98% of Americans would rather be comfortable than excellent!”

Wow! Those who succeed will learn to test the limits of their comfort zone. I don’t want to look back on my life and wish that I had pushed a little harder. It’s up to you. You can be comfortable or excellent!
